At some point this semester, please post a link to an article, video, website, etc. that made you think about something we’ve done in class. Also, please provide a brief discussion about whatever you submitted. This has no due date, but my hope is that you will check it periodically and read what your classmates are posting (feel free to comment, too).

Ira Glass delivered the commencement speech at the May 2018 graduation for the Columbia University School of Journalism, where he was also presented with a distinguished award for “singular journalistic performance.” One of the most notable (and humorous) segments of his words included the statements:

“Editing is crucial because in my experience anything you try to make - what YOU want is for the story to be AMAZING. But what the story wants to be is MEDIOCRE OR WORSE. And the entire process of making the story is convincing the story to not be what it wants to be, which is BAD.”

Glass goes on to emphasize the importance of seeking out critical and trustworthy individuals who will add perspective and dimension to one’s work. These portions of his speech mirror Kurt’s intentions for our class as demonstrated by our writing groups; the first meeting of our summer session began with Kurt specifying how crucial it is to maintain a circle of peers with whom we write and critique one another’s work. As reflected in the first two chapters of Becker, Glass further urges the writing we produce to carry with it the sense of purpose, appeal, and thoughtful intelligence our readers need and deserve to receive.

  2. I did a little search online, and found a coupe of sites with illustrations visualizing Dewey's ideas on knowledge and inquiry that we are reading about lately, and on David Kolb's learning theory which is influenced by Dewey's ideas. Listed below are the links to the sites, hope you find these illustrations useful.

  3. I'm hopeful this link will work: http://web.a.ebscohost.com.proxy.library.vcu.edu/ehost/detail/detail?vid=0&sid=192dc036-42d7-4bcc-b802-fe78574d94c5%40sessionmgr4008&bdata=JkF1dGhUeXBlPWlwLHVybCxjb29raWUsdWlkJnNpdGU9ZWhvc3QtbGl2ZSZzY29wZT1zaXRl#AN=66646079&db=ehh

I'm providing a link to an article titled, "The process writing approach: A meta-analysis" by Steve Graham and Karin Sandmel (2011). This article provides an accessible (and not too lengthy) example of a meta-analysis. I think that a meta-analysis fits well with the ideals of pragmatism because it attempts to get at the utility of a theory, intervention, or practice. I think it also attempts to synthesize related findings that may identify patterns or trends that might allow for a deeper understanding regarding the generalizability of findings.

The most useful things to look at would be the abstract and the tables on page 402 and 403 of the article.

Let me know if the link doesn't work!

  4. I’m sharing this TEDx video called “Public intellectuals & the future
of information” by Erica Stone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7icexlbjQnE.
It talks about how some public intellectuals share scholarly work with the public. It also questions how public intellectuals are working with the media organizations and how universities can make some changes to support academic research and rewarding scholars to public in open publications.

I’m also sharing a link to a movie called “The Man Who Knew Infinity.” You can watch it via Netflix. I watched it during the summer and really enjoyed it. We talked about math and research in our class, so I thought that it would be a fun movie to recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRpKygUC3Ys
It is based on the life of Indian math prodigy Srinivasa Ramanujan who navigated through the labyrinth of academia and racial prejudice in England.

We talked about Pragmatism and Dewey’s take on it. I also found an article relating to Critical Pragmatism called “Reconstructing Dewey: The Philosophy of Critical Pragmatism” by Alison Kadlec.
Some of us in class were discussing exploring more in-depth what is critical pragmatism? http://www.jstor.org/stable/3877080

  5. An interview with Stephen Toumlin, the author of Cosmopolis. This was the book that Herb, Qiao, and I presented in class: https://youtu.be/_axvwGd2WIo

Here is a link to the 1A episode Captivating America: Civility War. Our group’s discussion turned towards the stress of dealing with politics today, and I mentioned this episode:

Here are links to three art educators/professors debating whether art education is a discipline in 1962. I thought it would be helpful to see how they unpack their arguments in relation to how they define what a discipline:
